A forecast increase in farmed whitefish production is a welcome contrast for a market bracing for a notable decline in the wild catch next year.
Global production of farmed whitefish, including pangasius and tilapia, is expected to increase next year, according to a forecast released at the 31st Groundfish Forum in Copenhagen on Wednesday.Supply of pangasius and tilapia combined is forecast to rise 5 percent in 2025 – a welcome prediction of growth in key farmed whitefish species that contrasts with an expected decline in next year’s wild harvest.
The Groundfish Forum forecast supply of pangasius, striped and channel catfish at 4.497 million metric tons next year, an increase of 5.6 percent on this year’s number. Vietnam will supply 2.124 million metric tons, or almost half of the global harvest, while India will supply 776,000 metric tons.
