-
Wear a bicycle helmet that fits properly.
-
Make yourself visible to other vehicles. Wear bright-colored clothing and a reflective vest. You can even add reflective strips to your helmet.
-
When riding in a group, always ride in single file.
-
Never weave in and out of traffic.
-
Never, ever hold on to another vehicle to hitch a ride.
-
Know the rules of the road. Bicycles are not allowed on many highways, and there may be other roads that restrict them as well.
-
Make sure your bicycle is in good working order. Your bicycle should be equipped with an air pump and a flat-tire repair kit.
-
Keep alert for poor road conditions. Holes and other rough surfaces can cause cyclists to fall.
-
Do not ride in poor weather. Rain, snow, and ice make roads very slippery.
-
Be especially careful at intersections. It is hard for motorists, particularly ones who are turning, to see cyclists.
-
Do not carry too much on your bicycle. Adult passengers or heavy cargo can make a bicycle much harder to control.
