UN Delegation Praises C.Vale's Tilapia Operations in Brazil

FAO, Sebrae Representatives Tour High-Tech Facility in Paraná, Seeking Inspiration for Small-Scale Aquaculture Projects. A delegation of aquaculture experts, including representatives from the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Sebrae, and fish farmers from the state of Alagoas, visited the C.Vale cooperative to study its advanced fish production system. The group was deeply impressed by the scale and efficiency of the tilapia operation in Palotina, Paraná, a state that leads Brazil in fish farming.

Gisele Duarte, the FAO representative, described the experience as a learning mission. “The numbers are impressive. It was incredible to see the production line, the state-of-the-art machinery, and the team’s synergy,” she stated. She noted that the facility's process, which takes just 25 minutes from the arrival of live fish to freezing, demonstrates a commitment to modern technology that improves efficiency and worker conditions.

The visit is part of a collaborative project between FAO, Brazil's Ministry of Fisheries, and Sebrae to support small-scale aquaculture farmers. The goal is to boost family income for fish farmers in six municipalities within the interior of Alagoas. Ingrid Santos, head of the aquaculture production chain at Sebrae Alagoas, was particularly impressed by the cooperative's dedication to investment.

C.Vale, which is one of Brazil's largest and most technologically advanced cooperatives, plays a crucial role in the country's agribusiness sector. Its success in tilapia farming serves as a model for sustainable and profitable aquaculture. The insights gained from this visit will be used to enhance the ongoing project in Alagoas, aiming to empower local communities and promote food security across the region.
