Autism
Autism is a developmental disability that appears to affect boys more often than it does girls. Nearly one in 1,000 Australians has been diagnosed with autism. The term ‘autism' indicates one of several disorders known as Autism Spectrum Disorders. These disorders range in severity and symptoms, but each is characterised by problems with communication, social interaction and behaviour.
What causes autism?
Because autism is so different in each child, there may be multiple causes that trigger the disorder. Speculation includes genetics, environmental causes such as pollutants and toxins, infections, and brain damage that occurs during birth. There is no scientific link between childhood immunisations and autism.
Is autism serious?
Autism may lead to learning problems and delayed development. It is important to begin treatment for autism as early as possible to minimize the effects of the disorder.
Can I prevent autism?
Since doctors haven't agreed on what causes autism, it's not likely that it can be prevented at this time. The best thing you can do is to ensure that your unborn child receives proper nutrition and avoid toxins that might affect physical, mental and emotional development.
How do I know if my child has autism?
Kids with autism generally show signs of the disorder early on. However, parents may not understand what their child's problem is and may not seek a diagnosis until their child is a toddler. Kids with autism generally display the following signs and symptoms:
- Speech may be absent, delayed or abnormal
- Play may be isolated, repetitive, unimaginative, destructive and obsessive
- Body movements may include flapping and toe walking and may cause self-injury
- Obsession with favorite topics, objects, places, people, or activities
- Highly attached to rituals
- Throws more tantrums that last longer and are more severe than usual for their age
- Sensitivity to certain sounds, colors, tastes, smells and textures
How do I treat autism?
Doctors now recommend a multi-pronged approach to treating autism which may include behavioral therapy, social therapy, communication therapy, educational therapy, and drug therapy. Some parents also employ alternative therapies such as music or art therapy and special diets. Since every case of autism is different, it's important to find the combination of therapies that work for your child.
It is important to note that parents of autistic children may often feel overwhelmed. Managing autism is a tough job. Be sure to get the support you need by working with medical and mental health professionals, enlisting the help of family members, learning all you can about autism, and seeking out other families with autistic children.
Should I call the doctor?
Whenever you suspect your child has symptoms of autism, you should contact your doctor for an evaluation. There are tests he can perform to determine if your child has autism and he can help you contact other health professionals who can assist you in developing the autism treatment plan that is right for your child.
