HOW DOES THE DYSLEXIC STUDENT LEARN? The dyslexic student must be shown .... othe big picture and then how the details fit into it. oFrom parts to whole oFrom the easy to the more difficult oFrom the simple to the complex oFrom the concrete to the abstract oFrom the visual to the auditory oAlways showing him how new information fits in with what he has learned oWith much review and practice at every step of the way The dyslexic student is NOT... o an incidental learner. He must be directly taught (shown) everything. oLazy! He is doing his best. It takes many times more energy for the dyslexic student to get through the day and to do even average work, than it does the average student. The dyslexic student needs ... oa quiet, calm, structured, orderly, consistent and fair environment oone or two verbal instruction at a time o short, simple instructions with few words. Then ask, “What do you think you heard me say?”oa simultaneous multi-sensory structured approach to his language learning that uses all three pathways of learning: Visual, Auditory and Kinesthetic-Tactile oto be given every opportunity to use his creativity in his learning. otime to process what he has heard otime to respond otime to complete assignments The dyslexic student appears... oto not be paying attention. In fact he is experiencing an auditory overload and may even get a “glazed” look on his face. He can’t help this. We can help him by using the strategies above and by giving him the gift of time.
