Ritual Brazier of Ramesses II

Although found in the tomb of Psusennes I, this brazier dates to the reign of the 19th Dynasty king Ramesses II (ca. 1279-1213 B.C.). Until the discovery of this object, along with several others like it in the tomb of Psusennes I, these kind of braziers were only known through visual representations. The cartouches on the front carry the name of King Ramesses II, while the texts tell of the celebration of a jubilee. It seems likely that this brazier was made and dedicated on occasion of the jubilee mentioned, and could have been used in offering rituals or in the burning of perfumed resins. Obtaining ‘antiques’ of distant predecessors was a common practice amongst the Egyptian pharaohs, and served to further enforce their status as a leader.

عثر على هذا الكانون البرونزي في مقبرة الملك بسوسنس الأول رغم أنه لا يرجع إلى عصر هذا الملك وإنما يؤرخ بعصر الملك رمسيس الثاني ( حوالي ١٢٧٩-١٢١٣ ق.م.) من الأسرة التاسعة عشر. مثل هذه الكوانين لم تكن معروفة سوى من التصوير على الجدران إلى ان اكتشفت تلك القطعة نفسها، والكانون يحمل خرطوش الملك رمسيس الثاني ويذكر احد الاحتفالات التي احتفل الملك بها وقد يكون صنع خصيصاً لهذه المناسبة ربما ليستخدم في طقوس التقدمة او حرق البخور المعطرة أو ما شابه. وكانت عادة وضع 'أنتيكات' كان الأجداد يمتلكوها عادة يتبعها الكثير من الملوك المصريون القدماء وكان الهدف منها هو التأكيد على أهلية الملك للسلطة.
