Marine Aquaculture Development in Egypt
Hatchery Management Manual
May15.2012, Alexandria, Egypt.
Introduction
The aim of this manual is to give some guidelines about all the procedures for fingerlings production in a marine hatchery. After my experience in Egypt, I modified the standard procedure used in intensive European finfish hatchery, trying to adapt them to the Egyptian technology level and know-how, therefore the manual explains how to produce a higher quantity of fingerlings than the one actually produced in marine Egyptian hatcheries, without pushing the system towards high larval densities. However a brief description of the high technologies systems and procedures alongside the recommended procedure is also provided.
The main problems at the moment for the hatcheries in Egypt is that the productions are poor in quantity and quality, often damaging the fish farms that buy the fry or fingerling, as they ensure a low survival rate and high deformities percentage at the end of the fattening phase. These problems are mainly caused by the lack of technology, the lack of the proper methodologies, and the lack of a bio-safe behavior.
This document is just a preliminary work; the manual will be enriched in the next months, with more particular details, after the end of the first season of production.
