FAO Technical Training Workshop on Advancing Aquaponics: An Efficient use of Limited Resources

Abstract
A technical training workshop on advancing aquaponics was held in Osimo, Italy, on 27 – 30 October 2015. Seventeen participants attended from ten countries of the Near East and North Africa region (Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Mauritania, Morocco, Palestine, Tunisis, Saudi Arabia, the Sudan and the United Arab Emirates). The participants were mainly from government-associated aquaculture research centres. The four-day workshop consisted of lectures, demonstrations and hands-on activities supported by aquaponics experts. This activity was supported under the FAO Regional Initiative on Small-Scale Agriculture for Inclusive Development in the Near East and North Africa and the Major Area of Work on Efficient Resource Use under FAO′s revised Strategic Framework. Recommendations were gathered based on participant feedback, and included: (i) education, training and communication; (ii) research and development; (iii) socio-economic and feasibility studies; and (iv) regional and international cooperation.
