The stela of Merneptah's vectory

It was made out black Granite rock .It was discovered in Thebes at " the temple of the milions of the years" of Merenptah by Petrie 1896.

It was dedicated to god Amon and dated back to the 19th dynasty reign of Merenptah.

This stela comes from the temple Merenptah which had been built in western Thebes using the materials taken when he destroyed the temple of Amenhotep III. The new temple was built to celebrate the king's victory in the 5th year of his Indo-European migrations. They included the Libu, Meshesh, and other Indo-European peoples from Anatolia and island of Aegean.

This stela is also called  " The stela of Israil" because it contains the only known referance to Israel in Egyptian sources.it was mentioned that Israil was defeated by Merenptah .

This stela has 2 faces:

The 1st & the older side:

This face  belongs to king Amenhotep III .On the top of this face God Horus behdet is represented with a large scale under which 2 identical scenes for king Amenhotep III and god Amon and these 2 scenes were divided by a vertical line of inscriptions.

At the scene god Amenhotep III is represented standing infront of god Amon Re .The king is represented with the signs of royality wearing the double crown (hdjt), wearing the royal shndyt with a central tab ends with 2 cobra and a collar.

Amon was represented with his traditional form with his 2 feathers upon his head. The text was dedicated to god Amon by king Amenhotp III as a way of caring towards this god.

The 2nd side:

It belongs to king Merenptah. On top of which represented the solar disc as the other side but in a smaller scale. In this side depicted king Merenptah in 2 almost identical scenes.

 In the first scene he is represented standing infront of god Amon with signs of royality wearing the Khbresh crown ( blue crown of war). He represented wearing a collar , bracelltes,holding in left hand the hka scepter and in the other hand hold the Ankh sign of life. He is represented wearing a new style of kilt.

Behind the king represented god Khonso one of the Thebain triad.God Khonso holding in his hand sign of eternity (the rempt – sign of milions years).

The 2nd scene almost identical the king represent infront of god Amon but behind him represented goddess Mut one of the Thebean triad.She is represented wearing her recognizing crown . she is represented with a tight dress and holding sign of milions years. As if they were all wishing the king milions of the years.
