Thutmosis III was considered as one of the famous kings that ruled Egypt during the new kingdom, 18th dynasty. He was a very powerful king and he ruled for about 54 years. During his reign, Egypt enjoyed a great deal of wealth and prosperity inside as well as an aggressive foreign policy against foreign countries.
He was an illegitimate son of Thutmosis II from a secondary wife and for that reason he married his sister from the royal wife in order to have the right to ascend the throne of Egypt after his father, but as he was still young when his father died, Hatshepsut, thie royal sife of Thutmosis II and the step mother of Thutmosis III and his mother in law as well as his aunt. She declared herself co-regent with him for a while then excluded him and seized the throne and kept ruling the country for 21 years during which Thutmosis III was kept in shade. As soon as Hatshepsut died he was turned to military projects for hich he was so admirably gifted. Also he began to take revenge of his hated aunt by erasing her name from her monuments as well as erecting high buildings around her two obelisks in Karnak temple to make difficult for any one to know anything about her or about her great achievements which were inscribed on them. He led 17 campaigns, 16 of them were to the east and the last one was to the south. The most important battle which he led is known as the battle of Megiddo where Egypt achieved a glorious victory. In the course of the seventeen campaigns, all recorded in Thutmosis’ annals at Karnak, the Egyptian frontiers were extended from Gebel El Barkel in the south downstream from the fourth cataract in Nubia to Euphrates in the north near Iraq nowadays which means that Egypt during that time was an empire and that was the reason that Egypt had the title of The New Empire during that time. Thutmosis III had led a successful and intelligent policy by bringing small princes from the lands which he had invaded and educated them in a fully Egypitan mind so that when they grew up they became rulers in their nationality. But with Egyptian mind and that was the reason that some scholars called him Napoleon of the East
In front of us we have a standing statue of king Thutmosis III represented with all signs of royalty and in a traditional attitude. The statue is made out of Grey Schist which was brought from eastern desert and Sinai. It is nearly life size statue about 2 m. high. The statue as discovered in the court of the Karnak Cachette, in front of the 7th pylon at Karnak temple by a French scholar known as Legrain in 1904-1905. Thutmosis III is represent in a life size statue wearing the white crown of Upper Egypt but unfortunately, half broken, attached to the crown we can notice the ureas or the cobra. Looking to his face we can notice his delicate features which most probably were inherited from his mother Isis. These delicate features of the face appear in the wide eyes extended by the cosmetic lines, the delicate nose, the high cheek bones and the smiling mouth on an elegant neck. Also we can notice the good representation of the muscles all over the body.
He is represented wearing the SnDyt, the royal kilt with a central tab and a belt bearing the name and title of king Thutmosis III. He is represented with a step left leg forward. Under the king’s feet are the representations of the 9 bows. They are a symbol of the nine traditional enemies of Egypt or the three enemies of Egypt which are Nubians from the south, Asiatics from the east and Libyans from the west represented with exaggeration. He is represented holding a seal in his hand. Looking at the back of the statue we can notice that there is a back pillar to support the statue. This statue is dedicated to god Amen-Re
