The head rests

They are closely associated with the ritual couches and beds, they would have been padded with linen, to provide support during sleep. Eight were found in various parts of the tomb. The characteristic New Kingdom head rest is of a wasted form produced in two or three parts, 18 cm in height. Six examples of these types were recorded:

The first was made of wood, gilded without decoration or inscriptions. Two more were found with similar decoration in the annex. The third might have been intended for the three funerary couches. A better example was found in the antechamber in a black and white box with a vaulted lid that was placed on the hippopotamus couch, blue painted figures of Bes decorated either side of its base with a color of text in blue in the front and back with names and titles of the king, the quality of the other 4 are quite superb.

The fifth is made out of turquoise blue glass, some what discolored from the damp of the tomb, fashioned in two halves and joined in the center of the column with a square wooden dowel. The join was covered by a narrow strip of gold foil. Both sides of the columns carry a vertical inscription with names and titles of the king.

The sixth is of deep blue faience, made of two pieces joined in the middle, the joint concealed with a delicately inlaid wooden band.

The two remaining headdresses are of ivory, are each unique in design. The first representing the central column carved as the air god Sw kneeling and supporting the curved top surface of the headrest (heaven) on his shoulders, while the base is decorated with two couchant lions of eastern and western horizons carved on either sides. The back and the front are decorated with hieroglyphic inscriptions representing the names and titles.

The second takes the shape of a miniature folding stool, with a flexible rest of threaded ivory beads, variously stained in red, green and black. The outer pillow terminals are carved with Bes masks, while the legs are represented in form of gold hinged duck-headed, that are steadied by horizontal yellow stained ivory feet.
