King Senusert I is a very famous king in 12th Dynasty. He was the first king to be taken co-regent with his father. He changed the capital of Egypt to the Lisht or iTt TAwy (seizer of the two lands) in order to maintain a stronger grip over Egypt. He took great care of agriculture and developed it and started many agricultural projects. He sent many campaigns and had remarkable building achievements among them is his ever famous white chapel at Karnak. His statues were found in a pit near his temple in Lisht either because they are not completed or they were kept there for protection.
The statues:
They are made out of painted limestone as there are still traces of the paint on them. They are more than life size. The statues bear signs of royalty such as the nms head dress, the royal beard, the Sndt and the ureas on his forehead which has changed in shape in the Middle Kingdom. He is represented sitting on a very low back throne holding an object in his hand. At first sight the statues seem identical but there are some differences among them. One of the statues has the royal cartouche on its belt with the name of the king <!--<!-- <!--<!-- <!--<!-- <!--<!-- <!--<!-- <!--<!-- <!--<!-- <!--<!-- snusert. The head dresss and royal kilts in some statues are plain while in others it is widely ribbed or have narrow ribs. Under the feet of some statues there is the representation of the nine enemies of Egypt. In theory they are either nine or they are only three but the ancient Egyptians tends to exaggerate. The most resent opinion believes that the three enemies are the south, east and the west. This representation shows the strength and control of the king over his enemies. On both sides of the throne of the statue there is the smA tAwy sign some of them representing the two HApy gods in there hermaphrodite form to signify the union between Upper and Lower Egypt, the southern one known as HApy SimAayt and the northern one known as HApy mHyt. The hermaphrodite form is because the Nile is the sign of fertility and gives life to all living things thus the gods of the Nile should give life by themselves also. On other statues the other deities represented are the well known enemies Horus and Seth. This signifies that evil and good are reconciled during his reign and that peace prevails. The cartouche on the other statue bears his title <!--<!-- <!--<!-- <!--<!-- xpr kA ra which means the existence of the soul of god Re. apparently they are unfinished statues. Differs from one statue to the other there is a slight smile which is a sign of humanity also the softness of the facial feature reveals this fact. The eyes are not inlaid but colored as there are traces of colors on some statues. There is the representation of the Lapos Lazoly of god Re at the back of the head dress. The hieroglyphics on the sides of the throne are the titles of the king and the names of the gods and the offering given to them. The statues are placed around the burial chamber of Hry htp which is the representation of the development of the burial chambers in the Middle Kingdom. It is made out of lime stone and contains a sarcophagus.
