Today Reda and Abigail talk about a new survey in the UK which shows that regional accents and local dialects are not dying out as previously thought. There was concern that travel and television were causing a loss of regional accents. But now a BBC survey of 32 thousand people has found that there are more accents and local dialect words than ever before. We say 'to have an accent' and this can be a strong accent or a slight accent or even a posh accent. Of course your accent can place where you are from so we talk about people speaking wth a French accent or a Russian accent. If you move away from the area where you grew up you might lose your accent. Many people confuse the word 'slang' with the word 'dialect'. A dialect word is a local or regional word for something. An example of a dialect word is 'neb' which means 'nose' in the North of England. In English this is not the same as slang, which means informal language.
