Coral Reef Guide - Red Sea

Introduction
The Red Sea is unique. Its lush reefs stand in stark contrast to the surrounding desert landscape. It is the only deep ocean that remains warm to great depth, yet its surface waters remain pleasantly cool. While biologically part of the great Indo-Pacific region, it has a character all its own. Many of its species are endemic that is they are found nowhere else. The eastern portion of the adjacent Gulf of Aden is influenced by seasonal upwelling of coller, nutrient-rich water. Here, stands of kelp compete with corals in a unique mix of endemic species and Indian Ocean species that do not occur in the red sea. This guide covers the coral reefs of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. It has been prepared in order to enable the visitor to identify nearly all species of marine life likely to be encountered from the intertidal to 40 m, the lower limit of safe sport diving. The metric system is used throughout.
