Value- Chain Analysis of Egyptian Aquaculture
Project Report 2011 – 54
Introduction to value-chain Analysis:-
Value-chain analysis is not a new concept. It was described and popularized by Michael Porter in the mid- 1980's (Porter, 1995), and forms of analysis with many similarities have been undertaken since then by other. However, value-chain analysis is now becoming increasingly mainstream in development circles. Its increasing prominence as a form of analysis is largely due to the fact that it provides an excellent 'lens' through which we can:
- Focus on distributional issues and pro-poor growth, and on global linkages (in the context globalization); Benchmark changed over time; assess the relative importance of factors affecting competitiveness and the costs and earnings of those involved in the value chain;
- Identify gaps/weaknesses in in value chain performance; and perhaps most importantly.
- Identify 'levers' and targeted action programmers to 'upgrade' and improve value-chain performance.
