Abstract

This document contains the report of the FAO/RNE – INFOSAMAK Regional Seminar oN" Fish Trade and illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing (IUU) in the Near East and North Africa: Implication of Certification and Traceability Schemes for the Region", which took place in Agadir ( Morocco) during the period from 22 to 24 June, 2010. The objectives of the seminar were: (1) to provide Member countries with practical information on certification schemes in fisheries and also introducing the use of traceability schemes; (2) to clarify the differences and commonalities that exist between certification schemes related to fishery products quality and safety, and legality and sustainability in the fisheries market; (3) to investigate and elucidate the implications of certification and related schemes and the relationship between IUU fishing and trade for the region; (4) to highlight the role and function of fishery products certification and related schemes as means to combat and dater, prevent, and eliminate IUU fishing; (5) and to foster national efforts and sub-regional cooperation for fisheries sustainability including responsible trade of fisheries products.

A roundtable has been organized to tackle regional cooperation and technical assistance among the Near East and North Africa countries to combat IUU fishing.
