BOREHOLE GEOPHYSICAL STUDIES FOR COAL DEPOSITS AT UM MAFROUTH AREA,
NORTHERN SINAI, EGYPT
HAMED S.M. SABER*
ABSTRACT
Borehole geophysical measurements were used inside the exploratory coal well M-1(790 m.) at Um Mafrouth area, Northern Sinai. Lithology and stratigraphy of the penetrated rocks were interpreted. A coal seam and three carbonaceous shale beds were defined. Water-bearing beds were located and their porosities and salinities were calculated. Neutron porosity and volume of shale for sandstone and limestone beds were determined. The percentage of lime, shale and sand were calculated. Continuous temperature log indicates a relatively high geothermal gradient within the hole. Coal quality was determined.
