Aquaculture environments
Aquaculture could be sorted according to farming environments to:
Freshwater Aquaculture
this is the main aquaculture system which is practiced in earthen ponds, Nile cages, and intensive farms; the integrated rice-fish culture may fall in this category. According to Law 124 of 1983, with the exception of hatcheries, fish farms are only allowed to use agricultural drainage water. Limited number of species is farmed in freshwater aquaculture compromising tilapia, mullet, carps and African catfish.
Marine Aquaculture
there are few mariculture projects in the present whereas finfish or shrimp are farmed. Even though there are many sites which could suit marine aquaculture projects, most of which have been allocated and/or being considered for other activities especially tourism and urban development. During the past few years and in line with the efforts of promoting marine aquaculture, few sites have been surveyed for off-shore cages. Until present, marine aquaculture relies on naturally collected seeds of sea bream, sea bass, and meager. There are few projects in collaboration with European companies which is expected to speed the rate of technology transfer.
