أنشئت وحدة بحوث النباتات الطبية والعقاقير فى أغسطس 1956 وكانت ضمن وحدات الفارماكولوجى في ذاك الوقت والذى كان يندرج تحت قطاع العلوم الطبية وكانت تهدف الى دراسة النباتات الطبية المختلفة فى ج.م.ع بغرض معرفه فوائدها الطبية وخواصها الفارماكولوجية. وكان يراس هذه الوحدة منذ نشأتها المرحوم أ.د. ابراهيم رجب فهمى أستاذ العقاقير بكلية الصيدلة وعمل معه المرحوم أ.د. زكريا فؤاد أحمد والمرحوم أ.د. جمال الدين مهران ود. محمد زين العابدين عوض (وكانوا جميعا من جامعة القاهرة) والمرحوم أ.د. عباس الحميدى (بحاث) والأنسة فاطمة محمد عبد المنعم والسيد أ.د. عبد الفتاح محمد رزق ،  أ.د. فايزة محمد حمودة (كمساعد بحاث) فى ذلك الوقت ومنذ ذلك التاريخ بدىء بتجهيز الوحدة بالمعدات والأجهزة والأثاث والمواد الكيميائية . وبدأ العمل فى الأبحاث اواخر ديسمبر عام 1956 بالرغم من عدم استكمال الأجهزة والمعدات . 

The Medicinal Plants and Medicines Research Unit was established in August 1956 and was part of the pharmacology unit that were under the medical sciences sector and were aimed at studying different medicinal plants in Egypt for the purpose of knowing its medicinal benefits and pharmacological properties. The unit has been headed since its inception by the late Prof. Ibrahim Rajab Fahmy, Professor of Pharmacognosy, Faculty of Pharmacy, the late Prof. Zakaria Fouad Ahmed and the late Prof. Jamal Al-Din Mehran and the late Dr. Mohamed Zine El Abidine Awad (all of whom were from Cairo University) and the late Prof. Abbas Al-Humaidi (Resercher), Ms. Fatima Mohammed Abdel-Moneim and Mr. Abdel Fattah Mohamed Rizk, Fayza Mohammed Hamouda (Assistant Researcher). At that time, the unit was equipped with equipment, appliances, furniture and chemicals. Research work began in late December 1956, although hardware and equipment were not completed.
