Praise be to Allah, the Lord of Creations, and Peace and blessings be upon our prophet Muhammad, the faithful and the honest.
Oh, Allah, we know nothing but what You teach us. You are the All- Knower, the Wise. Oh Allah, teach us what is good for us, and benefit us from what You taught us, and increase our knowledge. Show us the righteous things as righteous and help us to do them, and show us the bad things as bad and help us to keep away from them.
O Allah our Lord, lead us out from the depths of darkness and illusion, unto the lights of erudition and knowledge, and from the muddy shallows of lusts unto the heavens of Your Vicinity.
Man should search for the common ground of all religions:
I would like to thank you Valencia University for its noble invitation, and I invoke Allah to help me be as what you expect.
I believe beyond doubt that man remains the same person whenever and wherever, so we should differentiate between the religion and the behavior of those who follow it. Accordingly, the truth of the religion is taken from its sources, not from the flaws of its followers.
Consider the situation of the children at home, and you will notice that as long as they are close to their father, they keep close to one another, and they help one another, but when they are away from him, they start arguing with one another. Hence, I believe beyond doubt that the conflicts between religions have political backgrounds, and religiously they are groundless, simply because all these religions have one source, and the branches of the source are identical. Man's success lies in finding the common ground amongst religions.
As you know man comprehends things with his mind, loves with his heart and moves with his body. The mind is nourished by knowledge, the heart is nourished by love and the body is nourished by food and water. Hence, man's success is manifested in feeding his mind with facts instead of delusions and feeding his heart with the love that exalts him, which is the love for Allah the Almighty and all His creations.
I am sure that the seven billion inhabitants on the earth share the same concerns; they are all keen on their safety, perfection and continuity of their existence. These goals are achieved through knowledge. Therefore, if you want to gain the worldly life, you have to seek knowledge, if you want to gain the Hereafter, you also have to seek knowledge and if you want to gain them both, you should seek knowledge as well. It was said"You will not be able to get some knowledge unless you are entirely devoted to it. Thus, if you are not devoted to it, you will get nothing." We must keep in mind that man is considered knowledgeable as long as he seeks knowledge, but the minute he thinks he is knowledgeable enough, he is considered ignorant.
Some Signs of Allah's Greatness:
1- The mosquito:
The safety of man's existence is achieved by applying the instructions of his Creator, so if man starts off from his keeness on keeping himself safe and happy, he will obey his Creator. Also the perfection of man's existence is gained through connecting with the Creator, because Allah is the source of beauty, perfection and giving, and He is the source of the continuity of man's life, which is achieved by raising his children. I am pretty sure that if we get acquainted with the Creator Who ordains commands upon us, we will be fully devoted to obeying Him, but if we know the Divine Commands without knowing the Commander (Allah), we will ignore His Orders We get acquainted with the Creator through His creations.
The most trivial creature we see in our life is the mosquito. However, when it was magnified by the electronic microscope, which magnify things 500.000 times, scientists discovered that there are 100 eyes in the head of the mosquito, forty eight teeth in its mouth and three hearts (central one and two hearts, one for each wing). Every heart has two atriums, two ventricles and two heart valves. The mosquito owns a system which the most advanced planes lack; it has infra red radar which is sensitive to 1 out of 1000 degrees Centigrade Celsius. This rader enables the mosquito to feel things not according to their shapes, sizes or colors but according to their heat. Moreover, it has a blood testing system with which it determines which blood suits it, and this explains why a brother is bitten while the other one is not although they sleep in the same room and their beds are next to each other. The mosquito has a system which liquefies blood, because human blood is too thick for the mosquito's trunk. Also, it has an anesthesia system, so that it bites without making someone feels its bites, and when he feels it and tries to kill the mosquito, it will be too late, for at that moment the mosquito will be on the ceiling of the room laughing at him. Its trunk is provided with six knifes, and its feet are equipped with hooked claws for clinging to skin, and cups for clinging to smooth surfaces.
How does anyone dare to dispbey the Lord, Who Created the mosquito? Does His Love not deserve to be sought? Does His Paradise not deserve to be longed for? Does His Fire not deserve to be feared? How do His servants dare to keep fighting against one another?
2- The galaxies:
We are moving now in our discussion from the mosquito to the sky. The closest star to the earth (other than the sun) is 4 light years. By the way, the light travels 300.000 kilometers per second, so in a minute the light travels such distance multiplied by 60, it travels this distance in an hour multiplied by 60, it travels it in a day multiplied by 24, it travels this distance in a year multiplied by 365 and it travels it in 4 years multiplied by 4 (300 000X60X60X24X365X4). The end result of this calculation is the distance, in kilometers, between our earth and the closest blazing star. If we want to travel that distance by a Ford car, for instance, we will spend 50 million years to reach that star. Imagine, we will spend 50 million years to travel 4 light years! The North Star (Polaris) is4000 light years away from the earth, Andromeda galaxy is 2 million light years away from the earth and the a recent discovered galaxy is 20.000 million light years away from us. How can anyone dare to disobey this Great Allah? Does His Love not deserve to be sought? Does His Paradise not deserve to be longed for? How does anyone dare to kill one of Allah's servants? "Man is the structure of Allah, so whoever destroys this structure is cursed."
3- Constellations and planets:
Let me mention a third Ayah and then move to another topic. Actually, the first speaker in occasions like this one takes his time, whereas the last speaker runs out time. The distance between the earth and the sun is 156 million kilometers, and the light travels it in 8 minutes. In the constellation of scorpion there is a small star called "Antares" (The heart of scorpion), andit is big enough to consume the sun, the earth and the distance between the two. Allah the Almighty says in the Noble Quran:
﴾O mankind! We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that you may know one another. Verily, the most honourable of you with Allah is that (believer) who has At-Taqwa [i.e. one of the Muttaqun (pious)].﴿
[Al-Hujuraat, 13]
The Messenger of Islam, peace be upon him, said:
((None of you [truly] believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.))
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim, by Anas Ibn Malik]
His brother in this Hadith means the bother in humanity. In another Hadith, the Messenger of Islam, peace be upon him, said:
((All people are servants of Allah, and the closest to Him is the best among them to mankind))
[Abu Ya'la and Al-Bazzar, by Anas Ibn Malik]
Comprehending the gist of the religion brings us together:
I went to south Sudan after the forty year civil war was over, and I saw hungry naked children in that area. Upon metting the president, I said to him, "By Allah, if asking about the religion of these children crosses my mind, I will despise myself, for those are Allah's creations." Comprehending the gist of religion will bring us together, whereas clinging to the tangible profits that are gained from the religion will separate us. The Hereafter brings us together, whereas the worldly life separates us. Also, the values bring us together, while the materialistic interests separate us. The only solution for all of us is to turn back to our Lord.
((When a servant turns back to Allah, a caller calls those in the heavens and the earth to congratulate him, as he has reconciled with Allah.))
As for "the religious men" who make the religion their means to make profits and the means through which they gain the worldly life, they are described by a poet as follows:
They are three and the devil is the fourth among them
The Shaikh, the Rabbin and the priest
