لأول مرة تعترف مايكروسوفت بأهمية اللينكس و انه يشكل خطر لنظامها ويندوز.

في تقرير نشر على موقع TechFlah كتب ان مايكروسوفت ذكرت مقابل Security and Exchange Commission و لاول مرة , أن شركة Canonical, مصنعة التوزيعة ابنتو, و Red Hat, موزعة توزيعات لينكس, تشكلان خطرا و هما من منافسي مايكروسوفت و خاصة ويندوز. من قبل كانت رد هات تعتبر فقط منافسة في قسم الأعمال و السيرفر, الآن الوضع اختلف.

و تابع التقرير أن المنافسة هي الأقوى في أجهزة النت بوك المحدودة الموارد. أيضا قال التقرير أن ابل تشكل خطرا و لكن هذا تم ذكره سابقا. الجديد هو الينكس الذي لم يتم ذكره سابقا.

Partners such as Hewlett-Packard and Intel have been actively working with alternative Linux-based operating systems"

أخيرا نفيد انه تم إضافة الأسماء التالية إلى لائحة المنافسين و هذا في المجالات الاخرى غير نظام التشغيل: Google, Apple, Opera و Android. موزيلا كانت موجودة منذ الأعوام الماضية.
