Journey to the centre of the earth
Chapters 1:5
Professor Lidenbrock had an old book which was a translation of a famous Icelandic book. A piece of parchment fell out of the book, the professor thought it was written in runes
Professor Lidenbrock couldn't understand its writing because it was written in a secret code. His nephew Axel could break the secret code. At first Axel didn't want to tell his uncle that he understood the secret message because his uncle would go on the dangerous journey and take Axel with him. Professor Lidenbrock thought that the parchment was written by Arne Saknussem a famous Icelandic scientist in the 16th century.
Professor Lidenbrock decided to start the journey to the centre of the earth. They took guns, tools and scientific instruments with them. They sailed to Copenhagen to meet a Danish scientist who gave them letters of introduction to the most important men in Iceland. They sailed to Iceland where they met Dr Fridrickson who arranged for a guide called Hans to take them to Sniffles. They climbed the sniffles peak and camped there.
On 28th June the sun shone and the shadow of Scartairs fell on the middle chimney. They descended
