Induced early mature mutants in cotton by gamma rays

Abstract:

          As a part of a breeding program on cotton by nuclear technique, numerous mutants were obtained following gamma irradiation on cotton seeds of race 5 which had been selected from variety cokert 310. Pedigree selections from M2-M5 were conducted. The screening program was concentrated on the following agronomic traits: early mature, productivity, high no. of bolls per plant and slight incidence with cotton boll weevil. Out of the selective mutants, four early mature mutants were chosen as promising genetic materials. These mutants (21, 39, 44, and 73) were selected from the variants of 250 Gy treatments. Results of field trial revealed that all of them were surpassed their origin in earliness indices (74.8 to 96.5%) compared to 50.0% in race 5.However, mutant 73 gave the highest number of bolls per plant (45.5). Meantime, the four mutants showed trace infection with boll weevil because all their bolls were completely matured in the third week of October. The mutant line 73 will be developed to be a new early mature cotton variety in Iraq.
