Cultural filtrate of Fusarium avenaceum on Czapeks broth indicated the presence of a phototoxic. This shown by wilting symptoms on broad bean, cucumber, okra and sesame seedlings when the roots of the seedlings were soaked in culture filtrate for 24 hrs. However no visible symptoms were observed on two broad bean mutants (135 and 153), bottle gourd, barley and wheat. The resistant reaction of both mutants was confirmed in pot experiments under controlled conditions using artificially infested soil with F.avenaceum. Meanwhile, necrotic spots were reduced on leaflets of broad bean. On TLC, one single spot was detected in both solvent systems. The spot was pink when the air dried plate was examined under ultraviolet light. Hover, the Rf values were 0.87 and 0.82 on BAW and IBW respectively.
