SUMMARY:-
This study describes the Seafood market for the area of Greater Cairo. It is a metropolitan city and is one of the largest and mega cities of the world. The historical and contemporary Cairo is presented as setting for the study. Due to the interdependence relationship between Egypt and its capital city, the structure of the various aspects of the fisheries sector in Egypt is unavoidable. Fish production has expanded in the last few years especially from aquaculture. Supplies from all sources converge into Egypt´s main wholesale market in Cairo and other city markets as well as a multitude of fish retailing outlets from where a varied combination of consumers purchase their seafood requirements as demand for seafood expands. Egypt is a main fish importer in the region but its exports are meager. Exports of high value products could expand as the EU lifted the ban on its imports from Egypt. Other markets for Egyptian fish should be explored especially to neighboring countries. The challenges for developing the fish marketing in the metropolitan city are presented. The study provides a listing of fish wholesalers, processors/importers, retailers, supermarkets chains as well as a directory of major fish serving restaurants.
