TURKISH FISHERIES
2007
Preface
As we all know well, natural resources are not infinite. Shared natural resources, as it is in the fisheries, are humanity's common heritage. Today, as we are recognize that fisheries resources in the entire world have been degraded mainly due to habitat destruction, pollution and overfishing, there has arisen a need to review the policies we have been pursuing to achieve sustainable fisheries and resource management. Therefore, international cooperation for the conservation of the fisheries resources is a must.
Fisheries is of important for Turkey, contributing to the healthy nutrition of people, supplying raw materials to relevant industries, creating new job areas; and offering a good potential for exportation. Our main police is to achieve sustainable fisheries resources by implementing effective protection and control measures and working in collaboration with all the parties concerned on the one hand, and avoiding any damage to our marine and freshwater resources on the other.
"Fisheries management" is one of the most important aspects of our fisheries policy. Great importance is placed on the control of catches, fishing effort and ensuring traceability. Other important initiatives are to set up a nationalwide system for the remote monitoring of fishing vessels; implement the fisheries information and vessel registry systems, and, at the landing sites, transfer the catch data to the fishery information system. We have already taken the necessary steps in this regard in Turkey.
Sustainable exploration of living marine recourses is one of the outstanding issues that should be of concern to all the states. Turkey attaches utmost importance to the achievement of the shared aims of multilateral agreements and to the strengthening of further cooperation and collaboration among the member states for effective implementation of regulatory measures specified by the agreements. In the ICCAT context, Turkey is sparing efforts to undertake its commitment to the sustainable management of the highly migratory fish stocks.
Turkey acknowledges the works devoted to the protection of either the bluefin tuna or the other species by the international organisations like the ICCAT and GFCM and believes that the initiatives supervised by the organisations are significantly contributing to the strengthening of the collaboration and cooperation both at regional and international level for sustainable exploration of fisheries resources.
