ABSTRACT

The General Authority for Fishes Resources Development is supporting the marine aquaculture sector, according to technologies and productive process adequate both to national and Mediterranean context, looking to the new market dynamism. The MADE project is a “leading action”, aimed to support the dialogue between the Egyptian private and public actor’s through a global assistance. MADE is Implementing specific instruments, as technical windows for the private enterprises and also, commercial/demonstrative productive activities, focused on seed production and rearing. Training is one of the project components; One of the keys increase the project sustainability is represented by the human resources. The on-the-jop training courses organized in GAFRD K21 hatchery in Alexandria over the last production Season (2011-2012) have paved the way for the next technical step for a high level training scheme for “Marine Hatchery Managers", carried out in Italy for 9 GAFRD technicians, under CIHEAM IAM Bari international umbrella and validation. The selected hatchery, Aquaculture Jonica, located in Taranto in Puglia Region, has technological characteristics that can be replicated in Egypt. The Egyptian technicians worked in the all sectors of the hatchery: algae, rotifers, Artemia, broodstock, larval rearing and fingerling pre-fattening. Attention has been given to the rearing phases,

Management have been observed, particularly for the swimming/air bladder development and correlated skeleton diseases. Several management aspects have been focused and implemented: tanks cleaning and disinfection, broodstock management and eggs collection, size grading, feeding and harvesting. After their training in Italy, the Egyptian technicians will be working in Egypt in the MADE project, which will thus ensure a high level of project sustainability in terms of training of trainers, extension service to the private sector. The training project component has the target to upgrading of the human resources capabilities within the GAFRD, in support of strong extension service for the private sector, to create the conditions of competent management and rapidly growing sector, with improved performance capacity of the GAFRD for supporting marine aquaculture development, giving a pilot value to the new infrastructure that the project planned to build. The sustainability of these productive units (hatchery and cage) will be also insured both by the private sector involvement in the project. In fact, the Authority intends to encourage the development and expansion of marine hatchery and cage fish production, as strong basis for the development of the sector, stressing both the Egyptian tradition and the possibilities offered by innovative productive systems.
