Abstract
The objective of this research is to develop environmental information and attitudes through the establishment of a program in environmental impact assessment (EIA) for the University students, and to test the validity of this program by teaching and testing it for a sample of those students.
Content analysis for the syllabus & curricula of University revealed shortage in the EIA information. The existing curricula concentrates on the individual qualification related to the production and economic activities for the projects rather than the environ-mental aspects they cover the different processes needed in the field such as designing,
construction, manufacturing, operating, maintenance & services, quality control and production …etc. Those students are expected to be involved in the industrial projects, therefore they have to be equipped with the suitable EIA information and attitudes. To achieve this goal an EIA program was designed together with an environmental information test, which includes 38 sentences and an environmental attitudes test, which includes 36 situation. Sample groups were randomly selected out of the third year quality control department students the group of 120 students was divided into an experimental and control groups.
The previous research apparatus have been applied on the sample group. The program was taught for the experimental group only. A pre-test and a post-test were given to the two groups and the following results were reached.
There were significant statistically differences on the (0.01) level in the grades scored by the students in the experimental and the control groups in the environmental information test after teaching the program in favor of the experimental group. This indicates that those students have acquired some environmental information which were includes in the program.
There were significant statistically differences on the (0.01) level in the grades scored by the students in the experimental and the control groups in the environmental attitudes test after teaching the program in favor of the experimental group. This indicates that teaching the program result in developing the environmental attitudes of the students in the experimental group.
Recommendations
1- Including the EIA in the curricula of the University.
2- Including the Environmental aspects which calls for maintaining and conserving the environment though out the use of the clean technology.
3- Developing environmental programs for the university education in general.
4- Methods and teaching have to be modified so as to create excitement and interest among the students.
