Fishing, Aquacultre and Import

Don Thompson Having been heavily involved in the Reef & Net Fishing Industry in Queensland, Australia since 1949 and the Prawning Industry since 1957 from Moreton Bay to Gulf of Carpentaria also pioneer of prawn fishing at Cape Upstart, I have seen the rise and fall of the state's fishing industries.

Collapse of the fishing industry in Qld originally in my opinion was from overfishing and then Government regulations and limits plus closing numerous fishing grounds now leaving only Aquacultue for supply and production of seafoood in Queensland in the future.

State and Federal government departments definitely do not make it an easy process to to start up an aquaculture facility. There have been developments towards a one stop process though. Those farmers who have an Aquaculture Licence are uniquely situated.

The biggest problem though for the Australian Aquaculture Farms are the cheap overseas imported seafood products especially prawns. Don
