New Features of the Second Edition of Microbial Life:

 Microbial Life has undergone a major overhaul in this new edition. The most significant change is the addition of a new author, Robert Gunsalus, as one of the four principal authors. Rob has taken charge of parts 2 and 3, which pertain to microbial physiology and metabolism, and helped integrated this material with other chapters of the book. As a result the content has undergone major revisions and includes much new, cutting – edge material.

Sina Adl and Alastair Simpson have also joined the book team as coauthors of the chapter on eukaryotic microbial life. They have provided through coverage of this divers and important group of protists and fungi, which is poorly treated or even omitted entirely in some traditional textbooks.

Each chapter in this new edition commences with a clear statement of objectives, succinctly written as bullet points. The chapter then continues with an introductory overview. As a student learning aid, a brief summary referred to as “Section Highlights” follows each major section in this second edition of microbial life.

Another significant change is that the new edition of microbial life has increased by about 20% in content from the previous edition. This major expansion has enabled the author to provide greater in – depth coverage of topics and to add additional information about recent and exciting developments in the field.
