Part of Butana Integrated Rural Development Project (BIRDP) activities is experimentation with lamb fattening in collaboration with Agricultural Research Corporation (ARC) under ECAW project which is intended to reverse or mitigate drought repercussions through viable technologies .However this is carried out in several villages in central Butana of Gedaref State by using the guar residues/debris mainly composed of twigs and leaves and involvement of women as traditionally linked with livestock husbandry at household level. The selected lambs were kept in pen at the back home yard and provided with the required amount of hay from natural vegetation in addition to 0.5 kilogramme of guar on daily basis as a supplement .Within 15 days the average increase in live weight varies from 1 to 3 kilogrammes.

The cost of one kilogramme of guar residue is varied from 1 to 1.3 SDG in the time being although it is expected to be lower in the near future in the view of the wide scaling up initiative taken by BIRDP. This initiative along with fatting and milk productivity increase by using guar is definitely will improve the livelihood of the rural poor particularly women and children
