Medinet Habu
<!-- PHOTO CONTENT: DESCRIPTION, NOTES, COMMENTS -->
. More from Egypt in December of 2009Medinet Habu is the memorial temple of Rameses III who was a bit of a screw up as pharaohs go. It seems he drove the kingdom into near financial ruin. In fact this temple is the only one with a guard tower. How odd that a memorial temple to the living god would need a guard tower? Egyptologists think that this indicates that the king and his cronies had to retreat inside of this temple for their own protection at one point, when the workers, who hadn’t been paid in months, rioted and . demanded food
This shot is looking up a hidden stairway inside of the first pylon or wall at the front of the temple complex. The first pylon stands 88 feet high by 211 feet wide. On it are scenes of the king in battle which is common for these pylons. What’s unusual is that on the end caps are stela (sort of a standing tablet with inscriptions) carved urging the populace to stay loyal to the king; a sign of trouble in paradise.
Medinet Habu over all is a fantastic temple and I caught some truly ‘wicked’ magic light inside of it. Stay tuned.
