Q Dear Practical Poultry, One of my birds seems to have a problem with one eye. It looks a bit cloudy and is also a bit watery. Is there anything I can do to clear the problem up?

A The surface clouding and watery discharge would point to this bird having a corneal ulcer - where the front of the eye has been scratched and damaged. Bathing the eye a couple of times daily can help, using just warm water to get rid of any crusting. Should the discharge become creamy or coloured, it may be necessary to get antibiotic eye ointment from the vet, but hopefully keeping the bird in a dry, clean pen, and ensuring the eye stays clean will be enough. The damage can be from food sources or caused by greenery if the bird spends time outdoors. If the problem persists, then it's worth spending some time looking into the likely cause to prevent future reoccurrence.
