Course Description: An introduction to the science of Immune-neuroendocrine interactions in chickens, as in mammals, has become a focus of considerable interest, with the modulation of immune responses by hormones receiving particular attention. Reproductive hormone, melanin concentrating hormone (MCH), proopiomelanocortin (POMC)-derived peptides have all been shown to influence immune functions in a number of chicken species. This course summarizes the known effects of these hormones on the chicken immune system, as well as the often-complex interactions between different hormones. The possible implications for chicken health, with respect to the changes in immunocompetence that take place during different stages in the chicken life cycle will also be discussed.

Topics covered include fundamentals of anatomy (of male and female reproductive systems), regulatory mechanisms (sex steroid hormones), immune system and immune responses and the modulation of immune system and sexual hormones. Students care for small numbers of chickens, ducks, and quails in different phases of their life cycle to maximize hands-on contact. Living animals, fresh organs and tissues from dead chicken will be used in laboratories.

Course Objectives: at the end of this course the student should be able to:

1- Summarize the knowledge of structure and function of domestic bird’s male and female reproductive systems in relation to production.

2-Indicate egg formation and regulating hormones.

3-Demonstrate and recommend egg production curve (Hen Day / Hen House).

4-Describe the steroid hormonal pathway affecting egg production.

5-Examine the immune system and immune cells. Differentiate the blood samples as well as blood cells.

6-Detect the immune response and antibody production in relation to the level of egg production.

Teaching Strategies:

1- Get feedback by asking formative / open questions.

 2- Reward outstanding students.

3- Repeat the main points (Muddiest points in previous lecture).

4- Ask the students to write reports about one selected subject, using internet sites, text books and scientific journals.

5- Request the students to present seminars based on their reports.

6- Use variable techniques in teaching activities based on problem solving, decision making, critical thinking, individual discussion and group interaction.

7- Describe clear objectives with updated references and cited websites.

8- Design timetable for topics and deadlines for assignment, reports and exams.
